Cheat Right – Part 2

PANCAKES? FOR BREAKFAST?

Obviously, this is not my first choice as a high energy breakfast; but they sure can be tempting. On my last trip to Hawaii, we went out to breakfast and I saw macadamia nut pancakes on the menu and really wanted them! However, I also know that sugar on an empty stomach spells disaster for me (and most people). The sugar in the meal will drive your blood sugar up and then 20 minutes later you crash and for me that means I get very, very grumpy.

CHEAT TIP: Order a scrambled egg first, as an appetizer and then order your pancake. The protein will help to stabilize your blood sugar will lessen the effects of the sugar in the pancakes. Or take some Speed Bump Breakfast Muffins with you!

SURE, GO AHEAD AND ENJOY THAT CHEESE PIZZA…

But start with the right appetizer! If you start your meal with something hot, research has shown that it can impact how many calories you consume during the meal.

CHEAT TIP: Order a bowl of hot soup (not cream based) and that will help you control how many calories you might consume later in the meal.

Oh and be sure to check out my segment on The Doctors for more tips on eating pizza the healthier way!

There is no sugar in my organic buckwheat pancake mix, to which I add some blueberries or raspberries. I sometimes drip a little syrup on one or two, but not much, but will try to forego that temptation.
