Holding 10 pounds of fat
Growing up, I watched a lot of TV; from The Brady Bunch to Gilligan’s Island, I sat for most of the afternoon. Even as an adult, I had my TV going almost all evening, sometimes I sat down and watched and sometimes it was just background noise. Either way, it was on for at least a couple of hours a day.
The average American watches 5 hours of TV per day. The more TV you watch, the higher your body fat content. A recent study found that if people cut their TV viewing in half, they would burn an additional 120 calories per day. That’s over 800 calories each week; the same amount of calories you’d burn if you walked an extra 8 miles!
The study showed that it didn’t matter what you did with your extra time. Some people walked their dogs, others did dishes, and some played with their kids.
I don’t know about you but not having to walk an extra 8 miles each week seems like a pretty good deal when it comes to weight loss.
My top five tips to help you lose that muffin top:
- No sugar in the morning. As soon as you eat sugar (juice, low fiber cereal, white bagel/toast) you set yourself up to crave sugar all day.
- Eat 70% of your calories by late afternoon.
- Fiber! I take a tsp of flaxseed before dinner. This helps fill me up and take the edge off my hunger.
- Eat a piece of fruit before dinner to help fill you up, so you eat less.
- Cut back on bread. For every slice you eat, your body will “hang-on” to extra water weight.
